Earthquakes, Tornadoes, and Thanksgiving???

This fall has flown by, which makes me happy. That means spring will be here before we know it. Of course Ma Nature was a little bit confused as to when the spring storm season is. Of course most people know, there is a small two week time frame for severe weather in the fall. It seems to float around between October and November. I normally don't pay much attention to it, except for lightning opportunities. Maybe I should start though as tornadoes have occurred this season and last. November 2011 in Oklahoma has been one to remember. The two most notable days: Saturday November 5th the state was rocked with a 5.6 magnitude earthquake. Then November 7th, south west Oklahoma experienced a long track cyclic super cell that spawned 8-9 tornadoes (one being rated an EF-4) over roughly a track of 100 miles! Later that same evening a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck. Earthquakes and Tornadoes on the same day...Only in Oklahoma! I'm sure the west coast inhabitants got a good laugh from us southerners. I do have to say in our defense that the ground is softer here. So a small quake can feel bigger. That's my story and I'm sticking to it lol. Earthquakes are a common occurrence in Oklahoma. They are never felt most of the time. Some are from the New Madrid Fault and others are from the Meers Fault. What I find confusing are the epicenters of the recent Oklahoma earthquakes. They are nowhere near either fault, as all have been centered just east of Oklahoma City. Some people say it could be from a technique called Fracking. Oil companies use the technique to make sure they are getting all oil and gas from a well. Fracking very well could be the cause, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea. I would think something like that would be more of a localized event. Not something that spreads over 100 miles. Either way earthquakes are crazy. I'd rather have tornadoes because I can see them. Wind & Rain

I'm slow to blog about hurricane Irene. It's been a hectic week and lot's of preparing to cover Irene. As of now we are still trying to decide where the best intercept will be. I know I know, you don't chase hurricanes. But you have to do a little home work if you're planning to be in the eye of one. You can't adjust your location once the game begins.

Looking at models and I wanted to note the GFS. It's not one of the main models used for hurricane guidance, but I wanted to show something of interest. It shows Irene not making landfall until Sunday evening around eastern parts of Long Island then Connecticut and Massachusetts head on.

With the all of the models not handling Irene very well, it's anyone's guess. I wouldn't be surprised if Irene slams into Miami FL. I mean forecasters anticipated Irene to be a Cat 3 hurricane right now. She is currently a Cat 1 as I type this. So I'll say it again, it's anyone's guess. That makes it really difficult to pin point land fall.

Don't get me wrong the whole eastern seaboard is going to be impacted by Irene, regardless of where Irene makes landfall. Below is a widget from the National Hurricane Center if you would like more detailed information. I encourage everyone living on the east coast to pay attention. You just never know what could happen.

Amazon has a Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 DX lens marked down to $199. It has great reviews and the only questionable side to it is the Bokeh. While not fantastic, it's not bad either. Just remember Bokeh isn't everything. A lot folks get stuck on that. Don't be afraid to push the "rules" of photography or even break them (I'm kind of a rebel). You never what you will come up with.

Light Painting

Last night my wife and I went out to Paint With Light again. Some fun images were made, but the heat created problems for the camera and the lens. It was 98F at 11pm, that's ridiculous! So the focus is not the best. Finding that perfect infinity zone was impossible. Taking my gear from 72F to 98F was not a good move. So we through the worry about focus out the window, and just had fun.

On another note: I purchased an EL Light two weeks ago and finally had time to use it. My wife really had fun with it, and produced some interesting images. I really like this one. It looks like a tree.

EL Lights can be purchased at Amazon.com for really cheap and come in various colors/lengths. Make sure you buy the models with a portable power source. Here is the link to the brand I purchased

I want to step away from photography and weather for a moment to discuss food. The other day I was channel surfing and come across the Pentagon Channel. I'm not sure when they added it to our listing but, I started watching it for a few minutes. That few minutes turned into two days with my wife watching also. Nothing was on more than 30 -60 minutes. One of the shows we watched titled Grill Sergeants. As you guessed it, it was a cooking show with active duty service members . Sergeant First Class Brad Turner was the chief for us on that episode. He is comical to watch and made some great dishes.

What's even better is the show has a website with all the recipes. All free and available for download here. I encourage you to give it a look. Bananas Alexandria is fantastic for a healthy snack and satisfies that sweet tooth. Trust me, it's replacing my not so healthy snacks. My biggest problem now is deciding on a main course. They all look and sound good!

Painting With Light

Painting With Light is a fun technique using different light sources in combination with long exposures. It's a great way to bring out your artistic abilities. The whole family can get involved too. Might be a fun date idea for you singles out there.

The typical light sources are glow sticks and flashlights, although anything can be used. Just take a walk through the camping and kids section at Walmart. You should find everything you need. I tried using a glow stick/kite combo. The end result was interesting to say the least. Just make sure you do not have power lines or trees in the area if you try the kite trick.

4th of July

4th of July this year was great...I got to see family, eat great food, and shot off some fireworks. Seeing how the 4th was on a Monday, most of the weekend had fireworks displays around the region on different nights. My wife and I were able to attend the Sherman TX show. It really was a good show. I was able to take some pics.

Warming up...Slowly

I'm ready for some warmer weather. Right now Ma Nature is transition us into spring, and you know what that means. Severe weather is around the corner. We experienced severe weather not far from my house just the other day. The pic below is a small area of rotation above me. The storm was trying to produce a tornado but, it was being choked out by another storm. It was fun none the less.

Winter Weather ?

As of right now, Oklahoma will receive a glancing blow from two storms. One from the south on Sunday and one from the north on Monday. Of course a 25-50 mile shift in the track of the lows can mean a huge difference as to what happens. Forecasting winter weather in the southern plains can be a daunting challenge. From what kind of winter precip, how much, and who is going to get what.

I've added some possible snow depth maps from two different models, and a current US Watches/Warnings map.

Only time will tell if my area receives anything. I'm kind a looking forward to something. The weather has been really quiet around this place. I've got my camera and video camera ready.

Just be safe if you venture out into it.

Yin and Yang

My chase partner Lanny Dean, is finally producing a dvd "Yin and Yang". It will be action packed, I promise you that. The dvd will be 2.5 hours featuring 50 different tornadoes. Even some never seen before footage of the Greenburg KS, EF5 monster. Lanny has put together a trailer that I have posted below. Be sure to check it out. Lightning

Last chase of the season. Lanny, Jeff, and I meet up a few weeks ago for a strong cold front show. Ma Nature provided us with some of the best lightning of the year. I had a lot of fun and it was great to catch up with those two.

Chilling

Well Ma Nature has given us some cooler weather as of late. Not having to run the A/C has been nice. Normally this time of year I am geared up and out hunting. Since the move and coming into a new part of the state, I have not taken the time. Feels kind a weird too.

I've shied away from being a weather social during the "off season". This time of year, lot's of drama unfolds and I don't want any part of it. I haven't logged into Storm Track in two months. It's amazing how weather fanatics fight and bicker during the off season. So the best thing to do is stay away. I've noticed a trend with a lot of the veteran chasers, they have backed off of the "community", so I'm following suit. If any of my weather friends would like to contact me, just send an email, use Face Book, or give me a call. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem hanging out with fellow chasers. This is a internet thing.

My new photography business is going great! I had a wedding a few weeks ago and I'm in negotiations to do a project for the local high school. FROM AN SR-71 PILOT.......Very interesting read....

SR-71 Blackbird

In April 1986, following an attack on American
soldiers in a Berlin disco, President Reagan
ordered the bombing of Muammar Qaddafi's
terrorist camps in Libya .

My duty was to fly over Libya , and take

photographs recording the damage our F-111's

had inflicted.

Qaddafi had established a 'line of death,'

a territorial marking across the Gulf of Sidra ,

swearing to shoot down any intruder, that crossed

the boundary.

On the morning of April 15, I rocketed past the line at 2,125 mph.

I was piloting the SR-71 spy plane, the world's
fastest jet, accompanied by a Marine Major (Walt),
the aircraft's reconnaissance systems officer (RSO).

We had crossed into Libya , and were approaching
our final turn over the bleak desert landscape, when
Walt informed me, that he was receiving missile
launch signals.

I quickly increased our speed, calculating the time

it would take for the weapons, most likely SA-2 and SA-4

surface-to-air missiles, capable of Mach 5 - to reach

our altitude.

I estimated, that we could beat the rocket-powered
missiles to the turn, and stayed our course, betting
our lives on the plane's performance.

After several agonizingly long seconds, we made
the turn and blasted toward the Mediterranean .

'You might want to pull it back,' Walt suggested.

It was then that I noticed I still had the throttles
full forward.

The plane was flying a mile every 1.6 seconds, well

above our Mach 3.2 limit.

It was the fastest we would ever fly.

I pulled the throttles to idle, just south of Sicily ,

but we still overran the refueling tanker, awaiting us

over Gibraltar ...

Scores of significant aircraft have been produced,
in the 100 years of flight, following the achievements
of the Wright brothers, which we celebrate in
December.

Aircraft such as the Boeing 707, the F-86 Sabre Jet,

and the P-51 Mustang, are among the important machines,

that have flown our skies.

But the SR-71, also known as the Blackbird, stands alone

as a significant contributor to Cold War victory, and as the

fastest plane ever, and only 93 Air Force pilots, ever steered
the 'sled,' as we called our aircraft.

The SR-71, was the brainchild of Kelly Johnson,
the famed Lockheed designer, who created the
P-38, the F-104 Starfighter, and the U-2.

After the Soviets shot down Gary Powers U-2 in 1960,
Johnson began to develop an aircraft, that would
fly three miles higher, and five times faster, than
the spy plane, and still be capable of photographing
your license plate.

However, flying at 2,000 mph would create intense heat

on the aircraft's skin.

Lockheed engineers used a titanium alloy, to construct

more than 90 percent of the SR-71, creating special tools,

and manufacturing procedures to hand-build each of the

40 planes.

Special heat-resistant fuel, oil, and hydraulic
fluids, that would function at 85,000 feet, and
higher, also had to be developed.

In 1962, the first Blackbird successfully flew, and
in 1966, the same year I graduated from high school,
the Air Force began flying operational SR-71 missions.

I came to the program in 1983, with a sterling record
and a recommendation from my commander,
completing the weeklong interview, and meeting
Walt, my partner for the next four years.

He would ride four feet behind me, working all the

cameras, radios, and electronic jamming equipment.

I joked, that if we were ever captured, he was the spy,

and I was just the driver.

He told me to keep the pointy end forward.

We trained for a year, flying out of Beale AFB in
California , Kadena Airbase in Okinawa , and RAF
Mildenhall in England .

On a typical training mission, we would take off near

Sacramento, refuel over Nevada, accelerate into Montana,

obtain a high Mach speed over Colorado , turn right over

New Mexico, speed across the Los Angeles Basin, run up

the West Coast, turn right at Seattle , then return to Beale.

Total flight time:- Two Hours and Forty Minutes.

One day, high above Arizona , we were monitoring
the radio traffic, of all the mortal airplanes below us.

First, a Cessna pilot asked the air traffic controllers
to check his ground speed. 'Ninety knots,' ATC replied.

A Bonanza soon made the same request.
'One-twenty on the ground,' was the reply.

To our surprise, a navy F-18 came over the radio, with a
ground speed check.

I knew exactly what he was doing.

Of course, he had a ground speed indicator in his cockpit,

but he wanted to let all the bug-smashers in the valley,

know what real speed was, 'Dusty 52, we show you at 620

on the ground,' ATC responded.

The situation was too ripe.

I heard the click of Walt's mike button in the rear seat.

In his most innocent voice, Walt startled the controller

by asking for a ground speed check from 81,000 feet,

clearly above controlled airspace.

In a cool, professional voice, the controller replied,
'Aspen 20, I show you at 1,982 knots on the ground.'

We did not hear another transmission on that
frequency, all the way to the coast.

The Blackbird always showed us something new,
each aircraft possessing its own unique personality.

In time, we realized we were flying a national treasure.

When we taxied out of our revetments for take-off,

people took notice.

Traffic congregated near the airfield fences, because

everyone wanted to see, and hear the mighty SR-71.

You could not be a part of this program, and not come

to love the airplane.

Slowly, she revealed her secrets to us, as we earned

her trust.

One moonless night, while flying a routine training
mission over the Pacific, I wondered what the sky
would look like from 84,000 feet, if the cockpit lighting
were dark.

While heading home on a straight course, I slowly turned

down all of the lighting, reducing the glare and revealing

the night sky.

Within seconds, I turned the lights back up, fearful that the

jet would know, and somehow punish me.

But my desire to see the sky, overruled my caution,

I dimmed the lighting again.

To my amazement, I saw a bright light outside
my window.

As my eyes adjusted to the view, I realized that the

brilliance was the broad expanse of the Milky Way,

now a gleaming stripe across the sky.

Where dark spaces in the sky, had usually existed,

there were now dense clusters, of sparkling stars.

Shooting Stars, flashed across the canvas every
few seconds.

It was like a fireworks display with no sound.

I knew I had to get my eyes back on the instruments,

and reluctantly, I brought my attention back inside.

To my surprise, with the cockpit lighting still off,

I could see every gauge, lit by starlight.

In the plane's mirrors, I could see the eerie shine of
my gold spacesuit, incandescently illuminated, in a
celestial glow.

I stole one last glance out the window.

Despite our speed, we seemed still before the
heavens, humbled in the radiance of a much greater
power.

For those few moments, I felt a part of something far

more significant, than anything we were doing in the plane.

The sharp sound of Walt's voice on the radio, brought me

back to the tasks at hand, as I prepared for our descent.

San Diego Aerospace Museum

The SR-71 was an expensive aircraft to operate.

The most significant cost was tanker support, and
in 1990, confronted with budget cutbacks, the Air
Force retired the SR-71.
The SR-71 served six presidents, protecting America
for a quarter of a century.

Un-be-known to most of the country, the plane flew

over North Vietnam , Red China , North Korea , the

Middle East, South Africa , Cuba , Nicaragua , Iran , Libya ,

and the Falkland Islands .

On a weekly basis, the SR-71, kept watch over every

Soviet Nuclear Submarine, and Mobile Missile Site,

and all of their troop movements.

It was a key factor in winning the Cold War.

I am proud to say, I flew about 500 hours in this
aircraft.

I knew her well.

She gave way to no plane, proudly dragging her

Sonic Boom through enemy backyards, with great impunity.

She defeated every missile, outran every MiG, and always

brought us home.

In the first 100 years of manned flight, no aircraft was more remarkable.
The Blackbird had outrun nearly 4,000 missiles,
not once taking a scratch from enemy fire.

On her final flight, the Blackbird, destined for
the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum ,

sped from Los Angeles to Washington
in 64 Minutes, averaging 2,145 mph, and
setting four speed records.

What Is Going On ?!?!?!

Yesterday I got really heated at another chaser, even posted some things that weren't very nice. Honestly I hate doing that, I really do. I normally like to mind my own business and go about my way. This other chaser has been going out of his way, on a regular bases, making smart ass remarks towards me and Lanny. Most was geared toward Lanny, but some of it was at me too.

I stayed out of it for the longest time, but finally I had enough. Striking back verbally. Again, it's really not something I like to do. I'm not totally sure why said chaser is having such an issue of letting things go. We have not gone out of our way to bother the guy. Maybe something is wrong at home, or maybe he is ill. Who knows, I just hope he can get some control and this bull shit can stop.

Of course there is a bigger story behind this. One that I will not go into, maybe another time. Although there is a bigger story, it shouldn't be causing the harassment to continue. Again, I hope some control can be gained by the other party, so the childish bs can stop. I guess time will tell.

Some People Need A Swift Kick In The.....

I have been really busy with the tours, so I haven't had much time to keep my blog up to date. I've had the last two days off, and I am trying to catch up on things. While reading a popular weather forum, I came across a thread and it had the following video below. Feel free to watch this, I'll have my opinion below.

That was probably one of the worst things I've heard, regarding a complaint. Really lady ! It's okay for other people to die, just so you can watch your show. Which will be available over the internet within a few days ! I know "hate" is a very strong word, but I do hate people like this. Maybe when her house is leveled by a tornado, she will change her tune. Or maybe she was on drugs. I didn't hear any indications of her being drunk, but I could be wrong. I hope it was something causing this lady to think the way she did. If not, then yes, I do hate her.

Whacky Weather Patterns

Talk about strange weather patterns. I don't remember temps and dew points like this in the middle of August ever. I'm sure it has been like this at some point, due to climate cycles. Normally its 100+ F and very little moisture. I still think the ENSO is playing a big part in this. Anyone have any other ideas ? I am curios to hear other theory's. Ugh........not sure how to re-size the Oklahoma Mesonet Pics.

NWS Changed Safety Procedures

Looks like the NWS changed emergency procedures if you are running from or caught in a Tornado.

If you are caught outdoors, seek shelter in a basement, shelter or sturdy building. If you cannot quickly walk to a shelter:
• Immediately get into a vehicle, buckle your seat belt and try to drive to the closest sturdy shelter.
• If flying debris occurs while you are driving, pull over and park. Now you have the following options as a last resort:
· Stay in the car with the seat belt on. Put your head down below the windows, covering with your hands and a blanket if possible.
· If you can safely get noticeably lower than the level of the roadway, exit your car, and lie in that area, covering your head with your hands.
• Your choice should be driven by your specific circumstances.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, my storm chasing partner Lanny Dean, threw some steaks on the grill. I have to say they were very tasty. I shot a photo of this and thought I would share it with you.

Lanny also turned me loose with his Nikon D80 Camera. BIG MISTAKE !!!! lol I was running around like a wild man shooting photos. I think he uploaded some where around 400+ photos. Great camera as you can see with the pic. I owe a big thank you to the Deans. They allowed my wife and I to spend the holiday weekend with them. Thanks guys !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, according to NOAA El Nino is firing up. NOAA is questioning how El Nino is going to affect the winter. They have posted a good article. Be sure to read it and tell me what you think !

June 9, 2009 Chase Vid

This vid shows some structure and some Scud Clouds lifting. There was some rotation, but most of it was very broad. This was a good test for the new vid game. I am not real happy with the quality from the upload. It looks great on the pc. Oh well, it's video I guess. The best rotation I seen, was the area I called spin (a little vortex). Not sure why I said spin....lol.

June 3, 2009 Chase

Yesterdays chase didn't produce any tornados, but I had fun none the less. Lanny Dean and I decide to chase west of Tulsa, close to I-35. The models indicated some potential, so we loaded our gear and hit the road.

As we got west of T-town we could see CU Towers going up, but they would soon die out. After further observation, we could see this would happen most of the afternoon. So we decided to wait until late evening, hoping things would pick up.

After a two hour wait, we decide to drive to a good vantage point to view anything trying to form. We watched more CU Towers going up most died out, but some of them took hold. They turned out to be multi-cell and not super cell, so we decided to take some structure shots.

Even though we busted regarding tornados, I had a great time. Thanks for taking me along Lanny !

Memorial Day Weekend

Well, I hope every one had a great holiday weekend. Hopefully every one took a few minutes out of their day to think about the fallen soldiers, after all that's the reason we could go to the lake, bbq, be lazy etc....

My wife and a I went over to Lanny & Laura Dean's for some bbq a couple of nights. We had a great time ! If you ever get the chance to hang out with them, I highly encourage it. They are outstanding individuals.

During the weekend, I looked forward to watching some war movies. To my surprise, there was very little shown until Monday. Even then, I only found maybe four channels showing them. While growing up, I remember most channels aired war movies all weekend. So what gives ?

I understand some people don't like watching war movies, because of the blood and guts. This day and age, there is a war movie for everyone though. I think it's the least we could do to honor our fallen heroes.

I'm not sure who calls the shots regarding what is aired, but I hope they can pull their heads out of their asses. At least long enough to remember what they have, because of what fallen soldiers have provided all of us.

My apologies for the cuss words, but it really pissed me off to see this happen. Maybe I am patriotic, but that's me.

Well, what chasers call an omega blocking pattern has set up. Thus not allowing good set ups for storms. I just hope it will clear out soon. They can last for weeks.
